Fairfield Police Receive DUI Enforcement Grant

FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield Police Department is excited to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the Department of Transportation for Comprehensive DUI Enforcement in the amount of $32,950.96.  These funds are available during the period of May 13, 2021 through September 11, 2021.

Every day, about 28 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 52 minutes. In 2019, these deaths reached the lowest percentage since 1982 when NHTSA started reporting alcohol data — but still 10,142 people lost their lives. These deaths were all preventable.

Drunk driving is the leading cause of death on our roadways and research has shown that an effective way to reduce impaired driving is to increase the perceived risk of being stopped and arrested by law enforcement if driving while impaired. One of the most successful strategies for doing this is the coupling of intense and highly visible enforcement with publicity about the enforcement campaign. The term “high-visibility enforcement” (HVE) is used to describe law enforcement efforts aimed at deterring unsafe driving behavior by increasing the public’s perception of being caught, arrested, and prosecuted.

Driving a vehicle while impaired is a dangerous crime. Tough enforcement of drunk-driving laws has been a major factor in reducing drunk-driving deaths since the 1980s. Charges range from misdemeanors to felony offenses, and penalties for impaired driving can include driver’s license revocation, fines, and jail time. It’s also extremely expensive. A first-time offense can cost the driver upwards of $10,000 in fines and legal fees.

The Fairfield Police Department remains dedicated to maintaining a safe community, protecting life and property, reducing crime and the fear of crime and to performing its function in a manner which promotes public trust and confidence.  This grant will further allow us to accomplish our mission while reducing the financial constraints which typically prevent this type of effort.  Through grant programs such as these, the Fairfield Police Department is able to continue its work toward the common goal of making Fairfield a better, safer place to live and work.
