FairfieldALERT: Coastal Storm to Impact Fairfield Tomorrow (Monday, 1/17/22)

This is an important message from the Town of Fairfield.

The National Weather Service has forecast a significant coastal storm to impact our area tomorrow (Monday, 1/17/22):

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 8 AM MONDAY.

COASTAL FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TO 1 PM MONDAY.

Major impacts for Fairfield may include:

– Strong winds overnight which may cause isolated power outages. Gusts up to 55 mph are possible.

– Persistent strong easterly winds will cause coastal flooding tomorrow (1/17/22). This flooding could be similar to that seen in October 2018.

Beach area residents are encouraged to move vehicles to high ground and take necessary flooding precautions. Beach residents are permitted and encouraged to park at the Downtown Train Station. Please lock your vehicles and remove valuables.

If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

All residents are encouraged to:

-Use extra caution when driving.

-Secure outdoor objects.

-Move vehicles to higher ground if in an area prone to flooding.

Additional coastal flooding concerns:

-Two to three feet of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.

-Breaking waves of 4 to 7 ft will result in beach erosion, wave splashover onto shoreline streets and properties, and minor damage possible to shorefront structures.

The next high tides are forecast to occur at 10:05 PM tonight and 10:19 AM tomorrow morning.

A degree of uncertainty remains in the storm track and wind intensity. All residents should monitor the weather forecast as storm impacts may change.
