Marine Unit Responds to Report of Boaters in Distress

On April 27, 2020 at approximately 3:59 PM, the Fairfield Police Department received a 911 call reporting individuals in distress on the waters of the Long Island Sound. The caller reported an inflatable raft with several people on board was being blown out to sea in the area of the 900 block of Fairfield Beach Road.

The Fairfield Police Marine Unit (PB1) responded and located the raft and its occupants. All five (5) individuals on board were safely recovered after being found on a small inflatable raft, approximately 3/4 nautical miles off shore, near the 2000 block of Fairfield Beach Road.

The Marine Unit assisted in safely returning the inflatable raft and its occupants to shore where their vehicle was parked. All subjects on board were uninjured.

All five subjects were not from the area and unfamiliar with Fairfield’s beaches and regulations. They were all warned of their violations despite a significant language barrier.

The Fairfield Police Department remains fully operational during the ongoing health crisis and officers within all Divisions of the Department continue to respond to calls for service as always. Despite the many changes and challenges to everyday life, our top priority remains protecting and serving each and every member of the community.
