On August 18, 2019, at 6:46 pm, the Fairfield Emergency Communication Center received a report of a possible drowning at Lake Mohegan, 880 Morehouse Highway, Fairfield.
Officers responded to the scene and determined there was an adult male that was swimming near the main beach area who went under water and never surfaced. Family members of the victim provided police with an accurate location where the victim was last seen in the water. Witness accounts stated that the male was swimming on the west side of the beach just beyond the swim ropes. Another witness saw the male in distress and observe him become submerged in the water.
The Fairfield Police Dive Team was deployed and began a water rescue operation. At 7:22pm, Police Dive Team Sergeant Jason Kline removed an unresponsive adult male from the water. Fairfield Fire and AMR personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts and the victim was transported to Saint Vincent’s Medical Center.
The victim was identified as Geovanny Tapia-Zuniga, 33 (DOB 10/03/1985), of Bridgeport, CT.
Resuscitation efforts continued until 8:09 PM at which time medical staff at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center pronounced Geovanny deceased.
This investigation is still active pending cause and manner of death from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
